ancient civilizations | truth & myth

History truly is written by the winners which in most cases meant the invading hordes and conquerors. Digging up treasures from ancient civilizations testify to this fact.

Egyptian Thoth & Isis

Oftentimes the stories we hear retold countless times are the ones often believed as the most true. Until we dig up something fresh and discover how different things actually were then than how we believe them to have been.

We have always adored our myths and legends from all over the world. When we rehash tales of the divine here at wonder | wander | world one of our favorite pastimes is comparing how humans believe in their God or gods throughout the ages.

Greek Zeus & Demeter

Recently we were talking about how the gods seemed to have lost their divinity as humanity advanced and were overtaken by their own egos. Comparing the Egyptian gods with the Greek, then Roman, and finally Abrahamic or Christian reinventions had many divine origins devolving into all too human traits.

Like bad Xerox copies of previous ones an Egyptian deity would devolve through periods into our current time sadly stripped of glory and showing much wear and tear. Thoth - Hermes - Mercury - Jesus the Christ. Isis - Demeter - Ceres - Mary the Mother of God.

Roman Jupiter & Ceres

These deities were written about by our ancients depending on whether civilizations were formed by immigrants or invaders. Who and how the people worshipped skewed the story and changed how they came about and came to an end.

Divine savior or devil incarnate? The pantheon of gods provide us with every imaginable aspect and facet humanly conceived and popularly worshiped.
