tiny genies: Chinese snuff bottles at the Met

In the first translation of the 1001 Nights, Aladdin and his magical genie actually came from 'a city of cities in China'. Our family's collection of snuff bottles, made of porcelain and red lacquer, seemed like just the kind of vessel that might contain a pocket-sized version of the wish-granting jinn.

artists in quarantine

Who better to bring art into your home than artists themselves? Every week, you’ll get an exclusive look inside the homes and studios—and in some cases, temporary home-studios—of artists who are, just like you, adjusting to new routines and ways of working. Together, these accounts will serve as a living archive of this moment and the ideas that persist.

#HirshhornInsideOut

The Hirshhorn Artist Diaries captures contemporary international artists’ responses to the worldwide pandemic. We reached out to more than 100 artists and asked each to contribute their voices to an art historical record. This living archive, released as a series of short, diary-style videos, will become part of the Hirshhorn’s record of the effects of the global pandemic on artists, their art-making practices and their views of the world.

Follow and respond with #HirshhornInsideOut, an ongoing effort to share our artworks, expertise, and public programming at a time when the Museum’s campus is temporarily closed.

dakilang mumo always

No words for the loss of our sweet giant, Peque. Beloved hero, mentor, lifelong friend and co-heart to us and boundless others.

After a slow decline in a flash he took his leave. Exit stage center from our lives. He was our beacon of light, love and laughter.

We were forever changed when he entered our lives. We are eternally enriched by his presence. Shine bright always our true North Star.

May we walk in Beauty in a sacred way
May we walk in Beauty each and every day.
May we walk in Beauty in a sacred way
May we walk in Beauty each and every day.
May the Beauty of the Fire, lift our spirit higher,
May the Beauty of the Earth, fill our heart with mirth,
May the Beauty of the Rain, wash away our pain,
May the beauty of the Sky teach our mind to fly.

pregnant with potential

Blessed Beltane! It's May Day!

Spring is transitioning into summer. Here in the East Coast we have had such a long winter our heaters are still running.

overcast day after last night's storm

Yet the season's change has just bypassed spring and gone full blast into summer. With its wild thunderstorms and crazy unpredictability. Blow hot, blow cold. Sunshine today, overcast tomorrow.
