Growing up in the Philippines, we practiced the tradition of Visita Iglesia (or church visit)
during Holy Week. This is a hold over from past Spanish colonial days.

Our family would troop to seven churches either on Maundy Thursday or Good Friday,
reciting the 14 Stations of the Cross in each.

Holy Week is commemorated with street processions, the Way of the Cross, and a Passion
play called the Senakulo.
In some communities (most famously in San Fernando, Pampanga), the processions include
devotees who self-flagellate and even have themselves nailed to crosses as dramatic public expressions of penance.
