Mothering Sunday

Laetare means "rejoice" in Latin. The 40 days of Lent are a time for solemnity among Roman Catholics - a time for removing vices and other distractions to facilitate meditative reflection. The wise and wily church recognized that people may need a break to tide some through Lent.

The fourth Sunday was considered a day of relaxation from the normal rigors imposed. A day of hope when Easter is within sight.

Traditionally, baptisms, confirmations, and weddings are performed on this day. Otherwise, celebrations were generally discouraged and even banned during the Lenten season of sorrow.

This Sunday is also known as Mothering Sunday, Refreshment Sunday, mid-Lent Sunday and Rose Sunday. Either because the golden rose sent by popes to Catholic sovereigns used to be blessed at this time or because the use of rose-colored vestments on this day.

On Mothering Sunday, Christians have historically visited their mother church - the church in which they received the sacrament of baptism.

Historically, the day was also known as Sunday of the Five Loaves. The noted bible story of the miracle of the loaves and fishes - multiplied by Christ to feed the multitudes.

Before the adoption of the modern common lectionaries, this narrative was the traditional Gospel reading for this Sunday in Roman Catholic, Lutheran, Anglican, and Old Catholic churches.

The Philippines, in an election year this 2022 - is taking it as a providential sign for the preferred popular presidential candidate, Leni Robredo - who shares the same pink colors for their team.
