a natural campus

wonder | wander| world in conversation — with our fellow island born, nurtured circle of friends, and former high school classmates — got to talking about our campus life back then.

A few of us went to college at the University of the Philippines, Diliman (UPD) in Quezon City. Growing up on our little lush tropical island made us appreciate the campus more — our escape from the concrete and crush of the overcrowded chaos in sprawling Metro Manila.

Although we had since moved on and have not returned to the community, it was good to see this grand state campus still thriving and well tended. We were among the lucky few who got to dorm on campus — a great comfort and convenience at a simpler time in our lives.

Back then we took our campus biodiversity for granted - although, as with Central park in NYC, once we stepped through the open gates - we could not deny how much better it felt. Our senses were immediately filled with fresh clean air to breathe and the sounds of nature unimpeded.

What a delight it was to see the campus had set up the UP Wild page on Facebook — check it out to stay in touch and be engaged in the campus arboretum. They have posted a biodiversity map which shows the various plants and animals that can be spotted in the different habitats on site.

Among these enclaves are grasslands, grass open forests, layered open forests, urban open forests, croplands, and wetlands. The collective community includes students, alumni, surrounding campuses and parks which help to extend pollinator pockets and wildlife preserves.

Aside from a number of native trees, the UPD campus is also home to creatures like the Philippine scops owl, Philippine rat snake, black-crowned night heron, black-winged stilt, coppersmith barbet, and more.

Let us hope we all remember to appreciate the flora and fauna beyond the campus too. Please continue to raise awareness for the importance of our urban green spaces and the biodiversity that is home to all.
