world wonders

Do we even remember what the original seven wonders of the ancient world are? The list shows us an old world that no longer exists today. Recalling a time when folks were still able to include imaginary places that did not exist.

Here they are:
  1. Great Pyramid of Giza, Egypt
  2. Hanging Gardens of Babylon
  3. Statue of Zeus at Olympia
  4. Temple of Artemis at Ephesus
  5. Mausoleum at Halicarnassus
  6. Colossus of Rhodes
  7. Lighthouse of Alexandria
To make it into the list each had to be considered an amazing work of art or architecture created through the ages by humanity. A great achievement or testament to the ingenuity, imagination and sheer hard work of human beings of ancient times.

The list was intended as a compilation of the most remarkable creations of classical antiquity. Compiled in the Hellenic period by renowned historians they were limited to Mesopotamia and Mediterranean sites.

Idyllic and lofty as their originators aims may have been these wonders turned out to showcase the human capacity for disagreement, destruction and embellishment as well.

Throughout succeeding eras more lists and even more achievements were attained as humanity sought to constantly outdo their predecessors.

A colossal and egotistical human trait continues to this age. To the detriment of much that were a lot more valuable and sadly have become extinct. More and bigger may not be better after all.

Which world wonders were you raised on? Which ones inspire you the most?
