quarantine diary: sketches

It's day 30 since official UK lockdown, although we actually started isolating a week earlier on the 16th of March. Since then we've had time to settle, take a deep breath (a lot of deep breaths) and begin building a new routine.

The first couple of weeks were silently stressful. We struggled against inertia within four walls while the world seemed to descend into chaos through the lens of our phone screens.

Slowly we healed and began to knit ourselves back together. As we chipped away at our anxious inner chatter, art began to flow in.

Drawing helped us gather our frayed ends together and gave us a safe, quiet space, which in turn strengthened us for more drawing. We drew whatever our wandering hearts landed on: animals, expressions, objects.

We play with colour, rediscovering tools we had no previous time to develop.

When unable to focus on bigger-picture projects or new techniques, we keep ourselves going with our favourite things, the way injured athletes gently stretch and strengthen a strained muscle.

Sometimes the analogue is more literal - exercising the left hand to spare the right hand any aches and pains.

Soon we hope to spread our wings more and get down to some great work! Excited to see what's coming over the horizon in our new reality.
