Marianne North (24 October 1830 – 30 August 1890) was a prolific English Victorian biologist and botanical artist known for her plant and landscape paintings, her extensive foreign travels, her writings, and her plant discoveries.

Wealthy and the eldest daughter of an English member of parliament she devoted herself to painting flowers. Unlike other Victorian women though Marianne North did not idle over merely pretty illustrations.

In her 40s she set off alone to travel the world, braving rough ship and living conditions to document over 900 plant species in just 14 years. She has four plant species named after her and a gallery at the Kew Royal Botanic Gardens.
