Memorial Day weekend

In the US wonder |wander | world celebrates Memorial Day this weekend with inclement weather and storm alerts.


This year we cannot help but draw parallels between the bad weather and the turbulence of our times. All over the world it seems like things are blowing up and we have lost our grip on major fronts.

Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May. On this day we honor the men and women who died while serving in the country's armed forces.

Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War, this became an official federal holiday in 1971.

Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades.

Unofficially, it marks the beginning of the summer season.

Stormy as this weekend may be we encourage all to carve out some peace for ourselves and share some loves as we hold our feasts and festivities with loved ones and strangers around the world.
